At first, the music of longtime successful singer, songwriter, and guitar player Dave Maswick can't easily be categorized. Is what he offers on All the Lies of Spain, his Europe debut album, Country, Bluegrass, Folk, or Pop? In any case, for the former member of the legendary Country-Metal-Bluegrass-group The Stony Creek Band, the well-meaning collective term Americana fits quite well. This is quite an interesting mix, really: On this self-produced piece of work, Maswick combines classic Bluegrass, firm Rock, modern Country, and Pop melodies that are colorful and modern yet don't sound as if he was really trying to to do everything differently or be much craftier. Above all, the unusually high voice, that one might at first have to get used to, holds the whole thing together. The guitar riffs move from traditional to modern and from catchy pieces like "Norveline" that reminds one of John Fogerty's CCR-times to "Be The One" that easily and quickly sidles up one's auditory canals, to the groovy fiddle number "When My Baby Come Home" to the atmospherically interpreted and romantic title song "All The Lies of Spain". Some songs simply don't work for Country lovers though, yet Dave Maswick definitely has his own charming way of doing things which is why one can say that this album has actually turned out quite well. Definitely not for Country purists, but everybody else and, in particular those who every once in a while like to look beyond their nose, are guaranteed to get lucky with All The Lies Of Spain.
