You donšt get to be Dave Maswick without a bit of history. In the years of MTVšs turbulent birth, you could have seen him with Blotto ("I Wanna Be a Lifeguard") or playing in the Hurricanes with Jeannie Smith (songwriter for k. d. lang), Grammy award nominee Eddie Angel (Los Straightjackets), and Dave Durocher (Marty Stuart). Although an early MTV artist, at the time Dave didnšt quite get what music videos were about.

"I remember asking the other guys in the band to explain how MTV worked. I just could not believe that people would watch commercials for records. I didn't get it...."

But that would be only part of the Dave Maswick story. A graduate of the Crane School of Music, his credentials include everything from concert appearances with 20th-century avant-garde icons John Cage and David Tudor to songwriting credit on the cult horror movie classic, Basket Case.

Many musicians have defining musical experiences. For Dave, one of those moments came early.

"The first time I heard a Beatles record, I was mesmerized. I had never heard anything like that and wanted to learn how to make that music. Later, when I saw the Beatles on TV I knew I had to make that music."

Another moment came when he heard that he had been listed in William Yorkšs Whošs Who in Rock and Roll (Scribner 1982) for his work as "Chevrolet Blotto."

"I went to my local shopping mall and found the book. There on the pages was my name! I could not believe it. I took the book and walked up to the cashier, taking the time to tell anyone who would listen that I had been listed. It was a very happy moment until the cashier rang up my sale and I realized that I did not have enough money to buy the book. Yet another reminder of the reality of life as a working musician."

By day, the prestigious northeast liberal arts college that Steely Dan referred to as "My Old School" calls him dean and by night he takes his licks on stages from Boston to Austin with Adirondack country metal bluegrass proponents, the Stony Creek Band.

"For over thirty years the Stony Creek Band has been making one of the most unique kinds of power country/bluegrass in the United States. Although wešve have not been able to break through to the highest levels of commercial success, everyone in Nashville knows who we are and what we do. In the late '70s, the New York Times referred to us as "well-seasoned progressive country bluegrass". I guess this means we were ALT Country before there was an ALT."

Now you can claim his stellar collection of new songs, All the Lies of Spain, written and recorded with the help of many of the northeast's finest singers, songwriters and musicians. All the Lies of Spain is precisely what you'd expect from a mature, seasoned artist of Dave Maswick's caliber...EXCELLENCE.
